Soloslides freezing/drops wifi

Postby Artgilbert » Mon Feb 15, 2021 11:26 am

Recently, soloslides using Google photos stops loading or says it is not connected to WiFi. Never used to happen.

Yes, shuffle is always on. We show all our google photo which are in excess of 10,000, I believe. We use an old iPad, IOS 9.3.5 cannot be updated. Capacity is 13GB with 10GB free.

Hi artgilbert,

I did some testing on iOS 9.3.5 with a huge google photos library on shuffle, and there were no problems.
The fact that you're seeing wifi dropping and the loading indicator get stuck on makes me think your iPad is experiencing connectivity issues, ie. your wifi signal is dropping every now and then. Older devices do not do well with this.

Things you could try:
- move the ipad closer to your wifi router
- if possible, try a new wifi router and see if that makes things better
- reduce the number of devices on your wifi router - standard consumer routers can only handle 10-20 devices before they get overloaded

I am 100% sure it’s not the router, but, it could have been too many online devices this weekend. Today, soloslides is running perfectly. I will update you if the problem reoccurs now that our WiFi usage is back to normal. The IPad does nothing but soloslides as its is being used as a photo frame and when we were having issues, I always do a Speedtest using my phone to be sure router and modem are running as they should.

I had a similar problem on my iPad3 with 16000 photos on Google photos. When I tried to browse to a website on safari or Chrome it wouldn't load even though the WiFi status bar said I had a strong WiFi connection. Once I disabled and re enabled WiFi Soloslides started working again.

Glad it is working today.

Speed tests on wifi only show you the throughput of the network: they do not show you packet loss, jitter, or outages that would be experienced when the wifi network is overloaded. It's really quite hard to debug an overloaded wifi network.

If you get into the situation again where SoloSlides is having issues for a period of time (ie. more than just once -- for a few minutes at a time etc), then try connecting your iPad's wifi to the hotspot of your cell phone. If it all suddenly starts working then that's a key sign it's something to do with your wifi or home internet connection.
