WifiBooth Recently started crashing when trying to print

Postby KelvinAid » Sun Apr 16, 2017 10:22 pm

Hi Tim
The app recently started crashing on me before and after the update, after a collage and the print icon is hit the red dots just spin and the app closes entirely ! PLEASE HELP 🙏🏾
Its sometimes successful but that's really occasional, even within the same day / session

Everything else is connected and setup properly
Other times the collage doesn't even appear after selecting images to make it

Please help

Hi Kevin
That's very strange.
Please can you check these basic things for me first:
1) make sure your ipad has enough free space - ie. at least 250MB free. You can see how much you have free, when you first start wifibooth (bottom-right corner)
2) make sure wifibooth is up to date (go to app store, updates)

Are you using BluePrint, DNP, or AirPrint to print? If Blueprint, please update the blueprint app on your iphone/ipod too

Perhaps your photos are too big for your older ipad. Set your camera to take photos as close to 2000x1500- no need for big 36mp photos!

Thanks for the prompt reply
I understand size issues
But these are the same settings I've been using since
Even photos via the iPad camera fail to print while the app crashes

That definitely sounds like a bug then.
Are you using airprint or blueprint?
If blueprint, can you please try updating wifibooth and blueprint to the newest version (in app store, updates tab)...
Don't forget to update blueprint too

Can you please write your print settings here for me: what is the paper size (ie. 4.0 x 6.0)? what is the DPI?
Also can you please try creating a new event, switching to that, and see if that changes/fixes the crash?

Hi Tim
Paper size is 4"x6" 300 DPI

When I start a new session though it seems to work
Then again the second time I experienced this was when I had just started a new session

Hi Tim
I've been able to make it crash
This was possible by going back to the previous event created (where the crashes were realized )
Crashes in the previous event and stable in the newer event
Do not me the newer event has more pictures than the previous event

Can you diagnose ?

In the event that crashes does the event name have any emoji like smiley faces or chars like öéôø?

What does that crashing event have for settings? Can you take a picture of the event settings and post it here?

Hi again
No emojis with event crashes
Now even new events crash when trying to print / when trying to email pictures (to save the strip at least, to print from iPad gallery )

Settings
3 shots per session
Interval of 5seconds
Beep

Print settings are
4"x6" paper
2 strips
Logo at bottom of the strips

No twitter or Dropbox settings in place

Recently I found and fixed an issue (in the upcoming update) around the logo.
Please check: what are the pixel dimensions of the logo you are using? If the logo is too big, then it can crash the app.
Also which exact ipad is this?

Thanks for your reply
I see
Could you please give me the correct pixel dimensions to use for my logos?

And it's an iPad mini

OK ipad mini would definitely potentially have this problem: that it runs out of memory, and crashes when it runs out.
The problem is that if the logo is too big, it takes a LOT of memory when it is being composited into the collage.
Please check the dimensions of your logo. Since you're printing at 6x4 at 300dpi, the collage is 1800 x 1200 pixels large. If you have chosen your logo size to be 20%, then, 1800 * 20% and 1200 * 20% gives us a target logo size of 360 x 240 pixels.

Please let me know what size your logo was (because if it wasn't big, then maybe something else is causing the problem).
Hope this helps, let me know!

Okay...
my logo was definitely large then
4500x3000 pixels
I realized something though
Sometimes Even by scrolling through past events crashes the app

Ah yes, this is definitely going to crash the app. That's waaaaay too big.
When you say "scrolling through past events", I assume you mean that after opening the event and viewing its photos, you are scrolling through its photos, and the app is crashing? That's almost certainly also because your ipad is running out of memory. Ipad minis have slow processors so they use memory for longer, which makes it much more likely to crash when the app runs out of memory.
That being said, my app should not crash!
Could it be that your photos are absolutely massive?
Suggestion for future events: turn on "downsize to print resolution" (Settings app -> Wifibooth) if you did not do this already. This will mean the photos are written on the ipad at 1800x1200px which is more than enough for email, dropbox, twitter, etc.
Then take the full resolution photos from the camera card if you need them.
