WPS 1 set up with internet

Hey Tim, i have to bring this up again:

The Perfect set up with the WPS 1 and Internet Connection.

A while back you wrote this;
Well done on figuring out the issue with the strips. That's actually great feedback: if the configuration is 2strips, it doesn't make any sense to allow users to print single photos! I will fix that.

Re the DNP WPS: not a problem, never hurts to ask. And luckily in this case I have an answer because i've done that with the older WPS-1: yes, you can connect the WPS to a mobile router. The configuration I had with the WPS-1 was largely because I found its wifi to be unreliable (might be because it was a preproduction/testing unit), so there might be more efficient setups, but here's what I had:

DNP DS40 --usb--> DNP WPS-1 --ethernet--> DLink mobile router
iPad --wifi--> DLink mobile router
Canon T6i --wifi--> DLink mobile router

Note that I had no internet in this setup (I may have gotten this working with the DLink DIR505 but it was years ago and I cannot remember), and was not using the wifi of the WPS at all.

Did you use this set up with internet since then?
Problem is here that when I plug in the mobile router it takes away the ability of giving 3g internet. But the weirdest thing is when the iPad is connected to the mobile router internet it can’t even find the don 620.

Any hints here? Appreciated!

Hi Johann
Sure happy to help you with this!
You wrote "when I plug in the mobile router it takes away the ability of giving 3g internet".
Why is that?

One way to get internet with WPS-1 is to find a mobile router that has all these things:
1) SIM card slot
2) ethernet port (at least one LAN port)
3) wifi hotspot (provides wifi)
Then you connect the iPad & camera to the mobile router's wifi, the WPS-1 via ethernet, and everything has internet access provided by the SIM card.

I did all of these things. I don’t know if maybe the mobile router somehow can’t be connected via Ethernet and giving internet at the same time...

I will try again and give feedback.

Something different: do you know this already?

You do need to carefully configure the mobile router, or it won't work correctly. Which router do you have?

Never heard of that product but it looks like a decent alternative to the WPS line! Would be great to hear if it works!
EDIT: seems like they tested it with Wifibooth and said it works, cool! https://www.photoboothemporium.com/airk ... mpatibity/

Hey Tim,

the device did not arrive yet but some theoratical thoughts here:

The device is able to connect to the WiFi from the camera and still provide the network with the Printer and internet via a router in dhcp mode. Wouldn’t this mean a big improvement? Since all the data is transferred via WiFi and not Bluetooth anymore? Furthermore This would make the iPhone with blueprint obsolete right?

What do you think?

The online documentation on that device is so confusing that I cannot actually figure out what it *is*.
But potentially yes, if it is both a wifi access point (AP) *and* a wifi client-mode device, and you can instruct the wifi client-mode part to connect your camera, and the device will bridge the two networks (AP and client-mode) together, then theoretically that would work.
But I have no idea if that device can do that.

Hey Tim,

Didn’t see you question before:

Our router is the Huawei e5730s-2

I can’t seem to figure out how to set it to dhcp mode. As you may hear, routers are not my profession ;)

Hey Tim,

the airkonv arrived and it looks pretty good. When connected directly to the iPad it works really fast and well.

The perfect set up WOULD be:
Camera -> iPad (camera wifi)
Airkonv -> DNP WPS 620 (cable)
Airkonv -> mobile router 4g (cable)
Airkonv -> iPad (Camera wifi)

But I think I am at an dead end with our camera. I assume that the Sony alpha builds a WiFi that allows only 1 device to join to control camera but doesn’t allow a 2 device in it just to share the Printer.

Am i Right with this guess?

So I think it would work very well with the canon 80D. I am really not in the mood to switch and buy the 80D again but nevertheless is the Liveview connection of it any better now? Maybe close to the alpha? It was our first camera and the Liveview was bad 1 year ago...

Any suggestions? :)

Cool that you got it!

Yes, your guess is correct: cameras that create wifi hotspots are making an "adhoc" hotspot which can only have 1 connection at a time.

There has been a slight increase of the framerate of the Canon 80D's liveview, but it will be nowhere near as fast as your Sony Alpha -- mirrorless cameras simply have a much faster liveview framerate over the network (compared to DSLRs).
Suggestion for the 80D: you could go into a camera store with your iPad (with newest version of Wifibooth on it), and connect to a Canon 80D and see for yourself.

Suggestion for the AirKonv: I thought the point of this device was that it would make an outgoing wifi connection to the camera, and then bridge the iPad via a separate wifi connection. I don't have time to look at the AirKonv this week, but I think your next step would be seeing if there is a way for the AirKonv to connect to the camera (instead of the ipad)

Hey Tim, apparently that doesn’t work either as the Sony camera requires a connection to a device that can control it. And the airkonv or router can’t just send that request to a device that’s connected to its WiFi...

We are getting a second booth and can use the Airkonv with that but I really hoped to solve the long time problem it takes to print because the Bluetooth connection...

I am in contact with the developer of the device. Should I ask him if he can provide you a device for testing...

Thank you
Johann

Hey Tim,

I came across the manfrotto digital director. Isn’t that a solution which would allow the camera to connect via cable to the app?

Yes, because they went through the complicated & expensive process of doing MFi-certification with Apple (that's the only way to gain access to the iPad USB port), and also built their own custom MFi hardware (required for MFi).

But I can guess why this product is discounted now:
- offers an update for iOS 9 support (see downloads). Uh, so it may not work with iOS 12 then...
- take a look at the canon cameras it supports. Notice how all the new ones (M50, R, etc) are missing. There's no plan for support announced either. For all I can see, this product is NOT under active development...
