Using canon rebel with external flash

Postby aluminumwelder » Wed Dec 05, 2018 6:52 am

https://wifibooth.com/help/articles/can ... iew-flash/

says canon rebels are not compatable with hot shoe triggered flashes??
I wil have to double check but I'm pretty sure I have used the pop up flash in the past on rebel cameras for testing!
if that is the case one can use a canon speed light for sure or a monolight that avoids the preflash triggers like this one:

I'd rewrite that article. Most people do not have a camera as nice as the 80D and giving them options to use cheaper t6, etc would be very good.

No the article is saying that the lower end canons are incapable of having a different exposure setting for liveview vs the photo. So sure you can use a flash with them but then liveview is all dark/black unless you also have big constant lighting before the flash

I understand that now.
I would still rewrite that article it does not explain it well. I mean when people read the quote below they will think, oh no, I can' tuse my t6 with live view and flash.
Also I a am pretty sure the 40, 50, 60d also will support live view with correct brightness by enabling exposure simulation in the menu. I could be wrong since I have not tested it, but that is the way the dslrs work with a pc.

"If you have a REBEL series Canon camera including the 750D and 760D (aka T6i, T6s), and you need to shoot with a flash, then you must disable Live View in Wifibooth (event settings -> Taking Photos)."

Thanks, good point. I just updated that article to try to avoid the misunderstanding. Appreciate the help.

I'm pretty sure any speed light will also make the live view bright on a canon rebel as well because it can communicate with the camera and let the camera know the flash will make the picututre brighter, thus no dark live view, but I think it has to be on aperture priority or TV or P exposure mode, not sure if it will work in manual mode

That was definitely not my experience with Canon cameras below the XXd line, ie. with my 750D. But I was not using a Canon-branded flash (it was an Elinchrom setup)

basically any flash that uses the 5 TTL contacts on the hot shoe will work in my experience because it can talk to the camera and tell it a flahs will be used.
.
any "dumb" flash that just uses just 2 contacts like a sync cord will not communicate the flash settings there fore the cameras computer has no idea a flash is attached so assums the picture will be dark since it cannot tell a flash will be used.

Many users are not photographers so they do not understand all thsi stuff, so I just tell them to use a speed light or a flash that supports TTL wireless triggering.

Hi,

Have you got any further with your testing for this?

I am setting up a photo booth for a friends wedding as their gift and want to get it right...

I have a Canon 750D, with a 430EX MKIII-RT Speedlite and an EF-S 18-55mm Lens.

I have tested at home and works fine, but that is a reasonably light room. I’m now concerned I’ll have issues when I go to set up in the venue.

Also, any advise on camera settings would be greatly appreciated. I’m about as amateur as they come. I’m also wondering if I should get an umbrella to bounce off as the roof is very high.

Thanks heaps
James

Hi James
To test it at home, put the camera on M (manual), set f8, shutter speed 1/80, flash on, and see what you get. Increase/decrease the flash power (only) to adjust brightness.
