Connection issues with Canon 70D

Postby AlimParis » Wed Jul 18, 2018 8:04 am

Hi Tim,

I don’t understand why but since few days, my Wifibooth is not any functioning.

I use a canon 70D, with alternate lib option on, and direct WiFi connection between my iPad (I tried on 2 different generation of iPad) and my 70D.

Connection seems to be ok, I can pilot my canon with canon App, it appears to be in connection while using Wifibooth, but when I try to take pictures I get the countdown but no image taken and a kind of freeze on the camera.

I already rebooted my camera to default settings (it’s not erasing WiFi parameters), and I’m sure option for live view is ok within Wifibooth app.

Do you have any idea ?

Hi AlimParis,
The "alt cam libs" option is not supported (it's there only for specific scenarios as a fallback). Please turn it off, restart Wifibooth, and try again.
If you still have issues after turning this off and restarting, please let me know which version of Wifibooth you have!

Actually I tried with alt can kind off first.

First of all I’m using Wifibooth since about a year with a lot of satisfaction. But since few days it’s not working anymore. Maybe did you released a new version ?

Anyway, to be sure I trashed the app and tried to reinstall it after restarting my iPad. I also tried to reset my camera.

On an older post I asked you about slowliness of the application and you wrote me to turn alt cam libs on. That’s why I did it again after trying for a while to take picture without this setting.

On or off it’s impossible to get any picture... that’s strange. And the strangest thing is that it was working fine about one month ago..

I’m using a 4.4.4 version build 5429 on a iPad with 9GB free and iOS 11.4.

Thank you for your precious help.

Thank you for the important historical context 👌🏻
That is very strange that it stopped working. The most recent update from 4.4.3->4.4.4 was a minor change.
Does it work if you turn OFF live view in event settings -> taking photos?
Please keep all settings in settings app -> wifibooth off for now thanks

Hey what was the solution to this problem?
I’m also using the canon 70d and the same problem occurred last night. The countdown begins, but no picture is taken. Then I have to reset everything. It happened 4 times last night.. super weird.
At the event four days ago it worked perfectly fine.

Hi adirpm,
That issue was already fixed.
The most common cause of no photo at the end of countdown for a dslr is using autofocus, and focus fails. Were you using autofocus?
Also, why did you have to reset everything? The countdown should show you it times out after waiting 60s for the photo

Hey Tim,

First of all sorry for keeping you busy during the last days and thanks for always answering so fast haha. 😊
I was using autofocus, but so far it was working good with the 70D. At least I thought so!
Since the flash has a light which is always on, there should be enough light to focus. However, nothing happened so I had to close the app. Just the “please wait emoji” was showing.

When the reset was done, iPad and camera would not connect again or loosing the connection at some point. That happens randomly after something goes wrong.

Since it’s recommended, I think I will include a router in the box and try to use the infrastructure mode of the camera. I hope that helps for a better WiFi connection.

Have a good evening and happy new year,
Adrian

Update: it was definitely the autofocus, that’s why the camera didn’t take a photo. Just tried it! But maybe that has nothing to do with the WiFi problem.

Hey Adir,
You're welcome - photobooths gotta run all year round ;)
So, when autofocus fails and the camera doesn't take a photo, there's a small chance that the camera gets into a state that it won't talk to any app anymore. In that case, taking the battery out of the camera for a moment, then waiting >2 minutes for wifibooth to detect the disconnection, then reconnecting the camera should work fine. Without restarting Wifibooth. Keep in mind that if you do this, you need to reconnect the ipad's wifi to the camera if you're using camera mode wifi: the iPad won't necessarily find and reconnect to the camera's wifi automatically.
Also please make sure you're running the newest Wifibooth - currently 4.7.1. There are always updates being made for stability etc.
