extreme slowness when using Canon 70D

Postby AlimParis » Tue Jan 02, 2018 10:53 am

Hi there,

I'm using a canon 70D linked via direct wifi connexion with an iPad Air 2 and WifiBooth updated.
When using the App, everything is OK except that the live-view is a bit slow and the picture taking process is extremely slow (I get the hourglass).

I downgraded the size of picture taken by the 70D to a minimum and I made sure that the iPad is only running the App, but nothing help.

Do you have any idea of what to do to get a fluid and smooth process in taking picture ?

Thank you a lot (sorry for my english)

Hi there,
Sorry to hear the app is slow for you, and don't worry about your english, it's fine :)

Please try this:
1) kill wifibooth
2) settings app -> wifibooth -> turn on "alt cam libs" (last option)
3) start wifibooth, try again

If that helps / does not help, then it provides me a clue... let me know...

Hi Tim, it's unbelievable it works better now. What does this option do exactly ?

Actually now the only thing that slow the process is the time for the camera to switch between the live view and picture review... but I think I should read the manual ;-)

Thanks a lot, your app is awesome (and the only one I found on Apple devices for DIY Photo Booth :-)), I'll probably buy packs.

Thanks!
This option changes to a lightweight camera library that i wrote with fewer options. You might notice strange behavior in some cases as it skips certain checks. But on some cameras it is much faster.

Hey Tim,

I’ve been experiencing he same issue as above and tried the old cam libs but when I turn that on every time I open the app the WiFi looses its connection to the camera.
Any thoughts on this?

I am not sure what you mean by "every time I open the app", but: once the camera is connected, minimizing Wifibooth with a connected camera is not supported. That's because iOS doesn't allow you to keep network connections open when an app is minimized.

Hey Tim,

Thanks for the reply. No worries so I guess the old cam libs won’t work for me unfortunately. Is there another way to assist me getting rid of this lag?

Hi Samuel,
I'd love to help you. Can you please be quite specific about exactly where the lag is occurring? For example, does live view start quickly, photos get taken at the right time ("Cheese"), but then the progress ring is shown for a very long time before the gallery is shown with the photos?
You could make a video of this happening with your mobile and post it somewhere, and post a link here...

Hey Tim,

Here’s the links for you

Wifibooth with 70D: https://vimeo.com/312659732
Canon app with 70D: https://vimeo.com/312659904
Connected to 750D: https://vimeo.com/312660736

iPad Air: IOS 12.1.1
Newest version of Wifibooth also

I’ve connected it to my iPhone 8 Plus and is still has the same result of the lag in the live view. This is my 2nd camera purchase trying to make this photobooth great but this live view is killing me slowly with the 70D.

Please save me

Hi Samuel
Hey I apologize for the long delay in my reply. It was a crazy time last week and I missed your message.
Thanks so much for the super clear videos - what you are experiencing is what I'd call "a low liveview frame-rate", meaning the number of frames per second coming from the 70D liveview in Wifibooth is lower than you think it should be.

I've sent you a link per private message to get you to install the current beta build of Wifibooth... check your PMs to continue there.

For others reading this thread, if there is a fix available, I will post here again

Eager to hear on this.
The live view is so choppy/laggy it throws off too many people who complain… so I've had to stop using it… but that also throws off people because, coming from the typical selfie experience, they believe they should be able to see what they're about to photograph.

So far the results have been:
- Canon 750D, 800D, EOS R: found a way to speed up the live view, yay! It's noticeable. Coming in the next update, or you can PM me for beta access - this speed boost will not hit beta until next week.
- Canon 70D: so far, no dice: looks like this camera is just too old and cannot support any of the parameters required to speed up live view by reducing resolution. Same for the 6D.

Hi Tim,

Would any of the advanced settings, like "alt cam libs" be applicable to the 80D or should I hold tight until the beta comes out?

Also, I did previously get on your beta program. Do I need to sign up again or will it still work using Apple's current beta "installer"?

You should definitely not use alt cam libs - wait for the beta next week. If you already can see wifibooth in testflight then you are all set, just wait for the update to show there
