App crash with latest release
App crash with latest release
Hi Tim,
Just updated to your latest release (1.5.2) and the app now crashes after selecting one of the "Get started with" buttons. Tested the Google Photos button and the Camera Roll button. Both crash the app.
Running an old iPad (3rd Gen)
Model: MC706LL/A
iOS: 9.3.5 (13G36)
Let me know if you need any other info to replicate. Happy to help test.
Cheers!

Uh oh, thanks for letting me know.
If you delete the app and install it again from the app store, does it keep crashing?

Re: App crash with latest release
Yes, unfortunately it does. Deleted and re-downloaded from app store, but to no avail.
The "Camera Roll" button crashes immediately after pressing.
The "Google Photos" button takes you through the verification process but crashes after the final step of "Allowing" the app to integrate to the users google account. And on subsequent tries with the google photos button, we get the loading icon for ~10 seconds then app crash.
Hopefully that makes sense and is useful for troubleshooting.
Thanks again!

Re: App crash with latest release
It does make sense, thank you. And actually it is better that it still crashes, because it means it is a reproducible bug that isn't related to migration.
I can see about 2% of users, all iOS 9, are having a crash in some Google code that I updated in this last release. I'm reverting it back to the old version and putting out a beta - i'll ping you back here in a day or so, and ask you to please try the beta on that ipad and see if it fixes it, ok?

Re: App crash with latest release
Yeah not a problem at all. Happy to help test as needed.
I was wondering if maybe it was an iOS 9 issue and the difficulty of keeping legacy versions of iOS compatible with the latest code. It would be unfortunate to lose iOS 9 compatibility though since it seems a lot of your users are repurposing old iPads to be digital slideshows via google photos and your app pretty much takes the cake since it still works with iOS 9.
Anyway, thank you so much again for all your time making such a useful product. Cheers!

Re: App crash with latest release
same here. Crashes with old iPad 2 @ iOS 9.3.5
Paied the app just last week and was happy to get great picture frame back with this app. Please be so kind to revert to the old version or fix this version. Would be appreciated.
Kind regards from Germany.

Re: App crash with latest release
I am waiting on apple for the beta to be approved.
I definitely want to keep iOS 9 supported. At the moment not all iOS 9 users have a problem.
It is frustrating because you would hope Google would test their code better. Oh well.

Re: App crash with latest release
Hi all
Thanks for your patience.
Can you please try this testflight build on your iOS 9 device and see if it fixes the crash? You need to open this link directly on your iOS 9 device, after installing the free Apple app called "Testflight" from the App Store..

Re: App crash with latest release
Tried deleting the app and installing fresh from Test flight but the app is still crashing trying Google login
Re: App crash with latest release
OK, sounds like the remaining Google pods are to blame then (I had to pick).
Let me get another build up - this one wont' need additional approval from Apple so should only take 10-15mins

Re: App crash with latest release
Unfortunately same problem.
Did a fresh install from TestFlight again.

Re: App crash with latest release
Hmm, that's odd - there are no Google packages left to downgrade. The difference between 1.5.1 and that build is virtually nothing.
Can you please try deleting the app, powering down the ipad all the way, power it back on, do a fresh install from testflight...

Re: App crash with latest release
OK I added build 50 as a control build: it is the same as 1.5.1. The purpose of this is to see if it's the base SDK that is the issue, rather than the actual code itself. If this build works, it's not the base SDK (good).
I wish I could reproduce this myself... I have one iOS 9 device but it never crashes.
Unfortunately there are no logs, this is some hard crash that looks like heap corruption

Re: App crash with latest release
Wow ok, then something with building on Catalina or Base SDK. Dang that is gonna be harder to figure out.
Thanks for the video and continuing to try new builds.
Im gonna try a build with altered startup times next: maybe this is some bug that is dependent on timing that i can workaround

Good news all, I found something promising here: https://github.com/firebase/firebase-io ... ssues/5233
--> it's a compiler bug in the current version of XCode ... holy geez.
I'm downloading an older version of xcode now, will push up a new build ASAP

Hi Tim,
It seems that you found the problem solution, didn’t you?
What do I need to do fix the bug on the app on my iPad?
Thanks and congrats by the app.

Re: App crash with latest release
Hello, I have the app on two old iPads, until last week the app was working as intended. No as per the thread the app crashes after home screen load when I click any button. Previously I was loading my photos through camera roll. This now crashes. Please advise. iOS 9.3.5 iPad gen . Thanks
Re: App crash with latest release
The update that fixes the crash will come out today.
To get the update, use the App Store like you usually do.
Post-mortem: Apple caused the crash by releasing a faulty compiler (fine, happens) that they did not update after they found the problem for 3 weeks (not fine at all). We test on an iOS 9 device, but this issue only hits some ARMv7 devices based on how the compiler optimization bug manifested, and ours was not affected.
